Warrington Vale Royal College Catering Taster Day

The lesson contained a brief introduction into the world of hospitality and catering, I then explained a few health and safety, and food safety points that the learners would need to be mindful of during the session. We then discussed likes and dislikes focusing on food types and the three core subjects within education. We then proceeded to discuss the importance of Maths, English and ICT within the hospitality industry, and indeed the wider areas of day to day life. The three learners were all involved in the discussion and showed a clear understanding of their importance. The activities I had arranged, initially required the use of basic mathematics and English. The learners needed to read the recipe and reduce the ingredients down by half. The learners were receptive to the idea and demonstrated the ability to complete the task. The next stage was to accurately weigh and measure out the required ingredients and to follow the method to make a batch of flapjack and a batch of churros. For this task the learners worked well together demonstrating good team work. The learners were polite and engaged throughout the activity and showed a good level of ability and confidence.

Priestley College visit

As part of the Careers Pathway Programme pupils visited Priestley College regarding the Sports Coaching course delivered by SGI Sports Education. Following the tour of the campus and its amazing facilities Joe (Recruitment Manager) talked about the coaching qualifications and the opportunities available throughout the 2 years. Joe was a previous student who went to America and Canada to coach football which was really inspiring to listen to. Over the next few months pupils will have the chance to take part in a football competition and do taster days to help transition successfully before September 2020. A number of students from Woolston Brook are into their second year at the college which was fantastic to hear.
