Curriculum intent statement

At Woolston Brook School, our curriculum is designed to serve students aged 7 to 16, offering an inclusive, broad and balanced educational experience tailored for those with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs). Our goal is to develop independent, ambitious and confident learners who are equipped with high functional skills, including literacy, numeracy and ICT proficiency, and are prepared for the challenges of adulthood.

Core Principles and Priorities
  • Holistic Development: We prioritise the personal and academic growth of our students, ensuring they develop resilience, emotional literacy and essential life skills. Our curriculum goes beyond academic achievement, emphasising the emotional and mental wellness of each individual.

SMSC underpins everything we do. We recognise that the personal development of the children, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant role in their ability to learn and to grow into well-rounded members of society. By integrating SMSC into the life of our school, we aim to develop a sense of society, tolerance and collaboration that tackles prejudice and promotes equality.

  • Inclusive and Supportive Environment: Understanding the complex challenges faced by students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, we provide a safe, structured and nurturing environment. Our pastoral care and therapeutic interventions work alongside our academic curriculum to create a sense of value and support for all students. Our school motto is relationships, responsibility and respect. By all, to all, for all.
  • Academic Excellence and Functional Skills: Central to our curriculum is the development of core literacy and numeracy skills, with a strong emphasis on reading as a foundational element. These skills are built sequentially, with each subject planned and taught to layer new knowledge on prior learning.
  • Preparation for the Future: In Key Stage 4, we offer a rigorous selection of accredited courses, both academic and vocational, tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students. This equips them with the knowledge, skills and cultural awareness needed to seize opportunities, assume responsibilities and make positive contributions to modern society.
  • Transferable Skills and Enrichment: Our curriculum fosters transferable skills essential for progression into further education and the workforce. We enrich learning through extracurricular activities, outdoor experiences and community engagement to broaden students’ horizons and promote social skills and cultural awareness.
  • Collaboration with Stakeholders: We actively involve parents, carers and the wider community in the educational journey, ensuring a collaborative approach that enhances students’ learning and personal growth.

At Woolston Brook School we aspire to nurture students who are confident, responsible, and resilient, prepared for the next stage of education and life. By fostering a lifelong love of learning, celebrating achievements and creating memorable experiences, we empower our students to become independent learners who strive to reach their full potential. Woolston Brook School is committed to providing a structured, evidence-based curriculum that prepares every child for a fulfilling and productive adulthood, regardless of the challenges they face.
