On the vibrant morning of 13th February 2025, the ICT room of Woolston Brook School was transformed into a hub of curiosity and excitement, as our enthusiastic Assistant Headteacher for Behaviour and Welfare, Ms Ellis, organised an enlightening talk by Sergeant James Allen from the Cheshire Regiment. The event, scheduled from 10:00 am to 10:45 am, not only attracted students from various year groups but also proved to be immensely popular, with attendees spilling into the corridors as standing space became a premium.

Sergeant Allen, a seasoned member of the British Army, brought with him a wealth of experience and insight into military life. The eager students, full of questions and anticipation, were treated to an interactive session that began with the Sergeant sharing his unique journey. He spoke candidly about the challenges and triumphs he has faced as a soldier, painting a vivid picture of the resilience and teamwork required in the armed forces.

As the talk unfolded, Sergeant Allen delved into the practicalities of life in the British Army. He shared with the students the various pathways they could pursue should they consider a career in the military. The discussion highlighted the age at which young people could apply and the spectrum of qualifications that are available depending on the career route one chooses. This information was particularly significant for our students, many of whom are at a crucial stage of contemplating their future and weighing different educational and vocational options.

One of the key highlights of the session was the opportunity for students to engage with Sergeant Allen on a personal level. Not only did he recount his experiences, but he also spoke about the skills, discipline, and dedication that are essential for success in the Army. The interaction encouraged a vibrant dialogue, with students eager to ask questions, gain clarity on misconceptions, and explore what it truly means to serve their country.

To enhance the experience further, Sergeant Allen brought along various pieces of Army uniform for students to try on. This hands-on activity sparked immense enthusiasm, as our young learners donned uniforms and proudly posed for pictures, capturing the essence of the memorable day. Many students expressed a newfound interest in military life, inspired by the practical involvement that allowed them to visualise themselves within that world.

The session not only met but exceeded the expectations of the Gatsby Benchmark 5, which emphasizes the importance of encounters with employers and employees. By directly engaging with a member of the Army, our students were afforded a unique opportunity to glean insights from a professional within a context that is both inspiring and educational. Ms Ellis’ foresight in organising such events demonstrates a commitment to broadening the horizons of our children, essential in a society that values diverse career paths and the myriad opportunities available to young people today.

As our students left the ICT room, the buzz of excitement was palpable. Conversations streamed from the hall as they discussed what they had learned and how it might influence their future decisions. Many expressed an appreciation for the clarity and motivation Sergeant Allen provided, highlighting the importance of such interactions in helping to shape their aspirations and career considerations.

Looking ahead, Ms Ellis shared her plans for similar events with representatives from the police and fire departments in the near future. This indicates a commendable initiative at Woolston Brook School to create a broader platform for our young learners, extending beyond military life to encompass various vital roles within our community. By providing multiple encounters with diverse employers and professionals, the school is fostering a culture of exploration and understanding, thereby equipping students for their upcoming transitions into adulthood and the workforce.
