In the vibrant learning environment of our Primary 2 classroom, a new Project-Based Learning initiative has taken shape, capturing the imaginations of our budding scholars. Our project, titled ‘I am Warrior!’ is not just a thematic exploration of history; it is a dynamic and interactive journey that immerses our students in the rich tapestry of Britain’s past and the dramatic encounters between the Romans and the Celts.

From the outset, the project has fostered a spirit of inquiry and creativity among the pupils. With a central theme of strength, bravery, and power, the project challenges students to envision themselves as warriors of a bygone era. The title ‘I am Warrior!’ serves as a rallying cry, inviting each pupil to draw their metaphorical swords and engage with the historical narratives that resonate with us today.

Through role play and dramatic reenactments, our students have embarked on an epic adventure that brings to life the clashes between two formidable cultures – the Romans and the Celts. The phrase “Meet me in battle” has echoed through our classroom, as children explore the strategies and motivations behind these historical conflicts. Each lesson serves as an invitation to invade ancient Britain virtually, fostering a sense of curiosity and excitement in our young learners.

The characters they encounter, such as the renowned warrior queen Boudicca, and the Roman Emperor Claudius, become more than mere figures in history; they transform into icons of resilience and determination. By studying these historical personalities, pupils are encouraged to reflect on the pivotal decisions and events that shaped their legacies. This investigation provides not only an understanding of historical contexts but also nurtures critical thinking skills as students contemplate the ‘what ifs’ of these encounters.

Our reading material complements the project in a delightful way. The students have been engaged with The Thieves of Ostia by Caroline Lawrence. This captivating novel, set during the time of the Roman Empire, serves as an accessible and thrilling entry point for young readers. As they journey alongside the protagonists, our pupils have the opportunity to absorb the nuances of Roman life, including their customs, daily activities, and, crucially, the excitement of the world of Roman gladiators.

As we delve deeper into the project, the concept of Gladiator School has emerged as a thrilling interactive segment of our learning experience. Students have embraced the challenge of learning alongside notable gladiators like Spartacus and Spiculus, well-known for their combat prowess in the glimmering Roman Colosseum. This element of the project allows pupils to understand the discipline and courage required of these ancient warriors, while also discussing themes of perseverance and teamwork.

When the action reaches a pause, our project takes a delicious turn. We encourage students to reflect on the sustenance of the time, imagining themselves feasting on historical delicacies such as dormice and grapes, or the more extravagant roasted swan sprinkled with nuts. This imaginative foray into culinary history has inspired some creative cooking projects, where children simulate ancient meals with contemporary alternatives, fostering an appreciation for how food is integral to culture and celebration.

Moreover, through collaborative activities, children have worked in groups to create thematic displays. These creatively designed posters and dioramas portray battles, historical events, and the daily lives of both Romans and Celts. This hands-on component promotes teamwork, ensuring that students learn from one another while developing their research skills and artistic talents. The classroom has become a tapestry of coloured papers, models, and written accounts, all of which help to bring the narrative of ancient Britain to life.

As we progress, the culmination of ‘I am Warrior!’ will be an exciting exhibition, where pupils will present their findings and experiences to peers and parents. This showcase will not only highlight their individual projects but will also reinforce the community aspect of learning, allowing families to appreciate their hard work and creativity. Each child's contribution is vital, ensuring that everyone feels valued and recognised in their learning journey.

The ‘I am Warrior!’ project embodies a holistic educational approach that cultivates historical knowledge, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking among our Primary 2 students. As they wield their swords and axe through the narratives of history, they are not merely learning about the Romans versus the Celts; they are becoming empowered historians and storytellers in their own right. With ongoing exploration, excitement, and engagement within our classroom, we eagerly anticipate what the coming weeks will hold for our young warriors. The battle is on, and learning has never been so adventurous!
