On the evening of Thursday, 8th May 2025, our Year 9 pupils had a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of theatre by attending a performance of Of Mice and Men at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse. This engaging trip, organised by our brilliant Literacy Lead, Stef Allen, followed the pupils' study of the play during their English classes.

As the sun began to set, a buzz of excitement filled the air as the students gathered at school, ready for their adventure. This theatre outing was not just a field trip but an extension of their learning, allowing them to experience first-hand the powerful themes of friendship, dreams, and the harsh realities of life that John Steinbeck so eloquently portrays in his work.

The journey to the theatre was filled with laughter and chatter, as students swapped thoughts about the key characters, George and Lennie. The anticipation was palpable. Arriving at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, the students were welcomed by the warm, cosy atmosphere of the theatre, which only added to their excitement. The venue itself is a lovely gem, a subtle nod to the rich cultural history of theatre in England, perfectly setting the stage for what was to come.

As the lights dimmed and the curtain rose, the pupils were captivated by the compelling performance. Every scene resonated with them, as they saw Steinbeck's iconic characters come to life before their eyes. The actors delivered a stirring portrayal of the struggles faced by the protagonists, drawing the audience into their world. The pupils were completely engaged – you could hear a pin drop as they hung on every line, and when the actors delivered those poignant messages that had sparked discussion in class, it was evident that the connection to their studies was very much alive.

What stood out most was the exemplary behaviour displayed by our Year 9s throughout the evening. They represented the school with great pride and respect, treating both the venue and its staff with courtesy. It was truly heartwarming to see them appreciate the art of theatre and engage with their peers and teachers in such a thoughtful manner. At the end of the performance, a wave of applause erupted, and our students joined in wholeheartedly, reflecting their appreciation for the hard work put in by the cast and crew.

Following the show, there was a chat amongst the pupils about their favourite moments, characters, and themes. It was a joy to witness how the play had sparked further discussion about the novel they had studied. The trip not only enhanced their understanding of Of Mice and Men but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the arts. We often forget how vital such experiences are in shaping young minds and encouraging creative expression.

As they returned home that evening, there was no mistaking the sense of fulfilment and joy amongst the students. They had not only enjoyed a night out at the theatre but had also enriched their literary experience in a meaningful way. All in all, it was an evening to remember, and one that highlighted the importance of such opportunities in fostering a love for literature and the performing arts in our pupils. A huge thank you to Stef Allen for organising the trip and making this experience possible. Here’s to more inspiring adventures like this one!
