Physical Education and Duke of Edinburgh Award

We believe in ‘Opportunity for all.’ The PE and Outdoor Education department are motivated in supporting all pupils to discover at least one activity that they can thrive in. Our overall goal is for pupils to continue to have an active lifestyle beyond school, through following one of our two pathways-
Healthy Living Pathway
Sporting Habit Pathway

The activities available at Woolston Brook are ever adapting and developing, as the needs and interests of our pupils change over time. Activities we have offer include; football, rugby, basketball, trampolining, gymnastics, yoga, dance, tennis, badminton, squash, rounders, athletics, fitness, rock climbing, canoeing, archery, and much more!.
Our pupils enjoy experiencing a range of different sporting opportunities, through quality PE lessons, enrichment, extra-curricular activities and external provisions.

Primary PE Curriculum Overview

Purpose of study - A high-quality physical education curriculum  inspires  all  pupils to succeed and excel  in competitive sport and other physically  demanding  activities. It  should  provide opportunities  for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Opportunities   to compete  in  sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

The National Curriculum for Physical Education aims to ensure that all pupils;

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • are  physically  active  for  sustained  periods

  • engage  in  competitive   sports and activities

  • lead healthy, busy lives

Attainment targets – By  the  end  of  each  key  stage, pupils  are expected to know, apply and understand the  matters, skills and processes  specified  in  the relevant programme of study.

Key Stage 3 & 4 Curriculul Overview

The purpose of this programme of study is to ensure that by the end of KS3 our pupils:

  • Build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities.

  • Understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work.

  • Develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life,  and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

To ensure pupils make good progress in these areas, this programme of study sets out the knowledge and skills that are covered in each half term using 5 key concepts, namely:

  • Healthy and active lifestyle (To develop knowledge of the components of fitness, fitness testing, training and the benefits of keeping an active lifestyle.

  • Acquiring knowledge (To develop knowledge around techniques, rules, the scoring system and safety aspects of the activity).

  • Skill development (To develop the skills of the activity through practice).

  • Decisions (To make decisions during a game and officiate games. To develop knowledge or tactics and strategies).

  • Analysing and Evaluating (Analysing strengths and weaknesses of themselves and others).
