Road Safety Week 19th - 25th November 2024 : Join the Movement for Safer Roads
By Mark Cullen
Road Safety Week 2024 was an impactful event dedicated to raising awareness about road safety and promoting responsible driving behaviours. This annual observance plays a pivotal role in reducing road accidents and ultimately saving lives. Through various initiatives, it encourages individuals, communities, and organisations to prioritise road safety measures and foster a culture of vigilance on our roads.
What is Road Safety Week, you might wonder? Well, it’s a nationwide campaign designed to shed light on the pressing issues surrounding road safety, including the prevention of accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Each year, the campaign focuses on the importance of responsible driving, pedestrian safety, and advocating for robust improvements in road infrastructure.
The history of Road Safety Week dates back to the mid-20th century, when it was first introduced to tackle the alarming rise in road accidents and fatalities. Since then, the event has blossomed into a global campaign, with a clear focus on preventing road accidents and enhancing awareness about road safety.
At Woolston Brook School, the new PSHE lead, Jo Flanagan, has taken the initiative to organise exciting events for the students during Road Safety Week. In both KS3 and KS4, pupils had the opportunity to discuss several important topics.
One topic they covered was "The Green Cross Code" – a vital set of guidelines designed to help pedestrians cross roads safely. It’s all about teaching them to stop, look, and listen before stepping onto the road.
Additionally, discussions focused on the different types of crossing available, such as zebra crossings, pelican crossings, and toucan crossings. Understanding how to use these crossings correctly can make a tremendous difference in preventing accidents.
Of course, we also need to address the importance of visibility during the dark nights. Pupils learned the significance of wearing bright or reflective clothing when out and about, whether walking the dog or cycling. Visibility is key to ensuring that we are seen by drivers and can safely enjoy our time outdoors.
As part of their learning, students also explored careers linked to road safety, such as that of a traffic warden. This offers a practical link between education and future career opportunities, whilst reinforcing the importance of road safety in a professional context.
