Engaging Year 7 with Project Flow
Hello there, fellow educators! Today, let's embark on a lively journey into the world of Project Based Learning (PBL), particularly through the lens of Cornerstones’ innovative curriculum approach. With the "Flow" project, every moment becomes an opportunity for learning, collaboration, and fun!
With the “Flow” project as our focal point, we can explore an array of stimulating topics that span across subjects, including Science, Art, and Design Technology. It invites students to investigate the fascinating concepts surrounding water, fluid dynamics, and even the emotional embodiment of flow in our lives. Got your attention? Let’s dig a little deeper!
One of the beautiful aspects of the “Flow” project is its flexibility and suitability for diverse learning styles. Picture this: a classroom buzzing with excitement as students collaborate in small groups, discussing their ideas and experiences related to water and its significance. It’s an excellent springboard to kick off the project, sparking those all-important discussions that lead to inquiry and exploration. Students might ask questions like, “How does water flow in our local environment?” or “What role does water play in our daily lives?"
To set the stage, we could start by taking the students on an outing to a local river or stream, where they can observe the natural flow of water. Not only is this a lovely way to connect them with their local geography, but it also provides them with tangible experiences that enhance their understanding. The hands-on experience fosters a sense of connection with the topic, making it feel relevant to their lives.
Back in the classroom, we encourage them to research how different cultures harness the power of water—think about the aqueducts of ancient Rome or the ingenious water management systems of the Far East. Recognising the cultural nuances tied to water can enrich their understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.
Now, onto the exciting part: creating their final project! Students can take creative liberties to present their findings in ways that resonate with their interests. Whether that results in a stunning visual presentation, a video documentary, or even a practical demonstration of water flow, the possibilities are endless! Not to forget, this freedom of expression boosts their confidence and nurtures their presentation skills.
A signature feature of the “Flow” project is the opportunity for interdisciplinary learning. Maths, for example, can come into play when students examine the principles of measurement in relation to water flow rates. Physics can be integrated as they explore the forces that act upon water in motion. And let’s not overlook the art component! Students can be inspired to create beautiful artworks depicting the myriad states of water, from serene lakes to roaring rivers.
As they delves deeper into the project, it’s crucial to foster an environment where reflection is woven into the fabric of learning. We encourage students to keep journals where they document their thoughts, challenges, and successes as the project unfolds. This practice not only promotes self-reflection but also helps them to develop a growth mindset—an invaluable trait for lifelong learning.
