On Monday 6th October, Woolston Brook School was buzzing with excitement as the fire service paid us a visit for an enlightening talk focused on water safety and the various roles of a firefighter. It was a fantastic opportunity for both pupils and staff to learn about the essential safety measures we should all be aware of, especially as the weather begins to change.

The event was organised by our marvellous Assistant Headteacher, AnnaMarie Ellis, who oversees Attendance, Behaviour, and Welfare as well as being our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL). AnnaMarie has a knack for bringing in engaging and relevant speakers to enhance our curriculum and provide our students with real-world insights. This particular visit perfectly aligned with our careers programme and the Gatsby benchmarks, showcasing the importance of exposing students to potential career paths and the skills needed for various professions.

As the fire service representatives entered our classroom, there was a palpable sense of anticipation among the students. The firefighters, dressed in their striking uniforms, greeted us warmly and wasted no time in engaging our curious minds. They discussed the various roles within the fire service, including firefighters, fire safety officers, and administrative roles. It quickly became clear that each member plays a vital part in ensuring the safety of our communities.

One of the highlights of the talk was their focus on water safety. The firefighters shared some startling statistics about accidents that occur near water bodies and the simple yet effective precautions that can prevent such tragedies. They advised us on how to assess risks when swimming or participating in water-related activities, emphasising that safety should always be our number one priority. Their entertaining anecdotes about past experiences really brought the information to life, and the children were enthralled as they shared safety tips in a fun and relatable manner.

Students were encouraged to ask questions throughout the session, and it was delightful to see how engaged they were. Their queries ranged from "What is your most challenging rescue?" to "How do you prepare for a fire?” The firefighters answered each one with enthusiasm, sparking not only interest in their profession but also awareness of the critical importance of water safety in our lives. Seeing the firefighters explain their crucial work with genuine passion encouraged many students to consider their own future career aspirations.

Furthermore, the discussion touched on teamwork and the significant role it plays not just in firefighting, but in all career paths. The firefighters illustrated how effective communication and collaboration can lead to successful outcomes, further underscoring our school's commitment to nurturing these values in our students.

As we wrapped up the session, students were buzzing with excitement, armed with newfound knowledge that they could share with their families and peers. The visit from the fire service was not just a fun and interactive experience; it was also invaluable education that left a lasting impression on our young learners.

A massive thank you to AnnaMarie Ellis for coordinating such a worthwhile event, and to the firefighters who took the time out of their busy schedules to visit Woolston Brook School. This enriching experience serves as a wonderful reminder of the importance of community involvement in education, helping to prepare our students not only for their future careers but also to be responsible and safety-conscious individuals.
