At Key Stage 4 (KS4), all of our students are currently engaging in an enriching curriculum that has been meticulously designed to meet the diverse needs of learners. Our pupils are undertaking the OCR Entry Level Certificate in Science (R483), which provides a solid foundation in scientific principles and practical skills.
In addition, some students have the opportunity to advance their studies through the Gateway Science Suite – Combined Science A (9-1) – J250, which equips them with a comprehensive understanding of both biological and physical sciences.
Furthermore, some students are pursuing the GCSE (9-1) Biology A (Gateway Science J247) qualification, allowing for a deeper exploration of biological concepts and applications. Our commitment to fostering a stimulating learning environment ensures that every student is well-prepared for future scientific endeavours.

In Year 9, all students will undertake the Entry Level Certificate in Science. This qualification is designed to provide a robust introduction to the fundamental concepts of science while catering to varying levels of understanding. The Entry Level Certificate fosters a hands-on approach, encouraging students to engage in practical experiments, investigations, and discussions. It serves as an essential stepping stone, aiding students as they develop their scientific knowledge and skills. This qualification not only prepares pupils for future academic challenges but also instils a sense of confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.
As students progress into Key Stage 4, they will have the opportunity to specialise further depending on their interests and academic aspirations. Among our Key Stage 4 students, some will undertake the GCSE Combined Science qualification. This double award provides a broad and balanced curriculum, covering essential topics in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The GCSE Combined Science course encapsulates an integrated approach to science education, wherein students explore interrelated concepts and gain an understanding of how these disciplines connect in the real world. The course is structured to combine both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that students are well-prepared for examinations and real-life applications of science.
Additionally, we recognise that some Key Stage 4 students may wish to delve deeper into the sciences. For these students, we offer the option to undertake a GCSE in either Biology, Chemistry or Physics, allowing for a more in-depth study of each scientific discipline. This course is designed for those with a strong affinity for science, as it challenges students to engage rigorously with advanced concepts and experimental techniques. This qualification is particularly beneficial for students considering further studies in science-related fields or pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)..
Across all our science courses, there is an emphasis on developing key skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent investigation. We utilise various assessment methods, including practical work, written examinations, and project-based assignments, to ensure that students are not only assessed on their knowledge but also on their application of scientific principles.
