We are very excited to introduce Evie, our full-time therapy dog at Woolston Brook School. Evie is a black Labrador puppy, born on 13th June 2025, and she joined our school family on Thursday 4th September 2025. Since the moment she arrived, she has brought joy, calm and smiles to pupils and staff every day.

Evie is a very sociable and friendly puppy who loves being around the children. She enjoys playing, exploring the school and spending quiet time with staff and pupils. The children have already helped teach her several commands, including how to sit, lie down, give her paw, and fetch a ball.
She is nearly through her teething stage now, and the children have been fantastic at reminding her—with clear, gentle instructions—when she needs to stop mouthing.

Although Evie already has a natural ability to comfort children when they are upset or finding things difficult, she will begin her official therapy dog training in the New Year, once she is over six months old. This training will help her develop the skills needed to support pupils even more effectively.
Evie is also great friends with Maggie, our visiting therapy dog. Maggie still joins us every Thursday and is based in the pastoral office, while Evie spends most of her time in the Headteacher’s and Deputy Headteacher’s office.

Many pupils really enjoy spending time with Evie, and this is something they can do during break and lunchtime. Children are also able to earn “Evie Time” as a reward for positive behaviour, effort and good learning. This has been a lovely way to encourage and motivate our pupils.

Having a therapy dog in school can make a big difference to children’s wellbeing, especially for those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Here are some of the ways a dog like Evie can help:
1. Helping Children Feel Calm
Spending time with a friendly dog can help reduce stress and anxiety. Stroking or sitting with Evie can help children feel more relaxed and in control of their emotions.
2. Building Confidence and Trust
Evie offers comfort without judgement. Children often find it easier to open up or talk about their feelings when she is nearby.
3. Improving Mood
Being around animals can boost happiness. Evie brings a sense of joy and comfort that can brighten a child’s day.
4. Encouraging Positive Interactions
Playing with Evie, taking turns or giving her commands helps children practise communication, sharing and teamwork in a natural way.
5. Boosting Self-Esteem
Children feel proud when they help care for Evie or teach her new skills. These small successes help build confidence.
6. Supporting Behaviour and Engagement
Many children respond well to the idea of earning “Evie Time”. It encourages positive behaviour and can give children an extra reason to come into school feeling happy and motivated.
7. Developing Responsibility
Helping with Evie’s daily routines teaches children how to care for others and understand simple responsibilities.

Evie has already become a much-loved part of our school. She brings warmth, comfort and fun to our days, and she supports our values of relationships, responsibility and respect. We look forward to seeing her continue to grow and to the many ways she will help our pupils thrive.
