Woolston Brook School is proud to announce our participation in Operation Encompass, a vital initiative that supports children and young people affected by domestic abuse. Organised by our dedicated Pastoral Manager, Claire Challinor, this partnership with local police enables us to provide timely and effective support to our pupils, ensuring they feel safe, valued, and cared for in school.

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a police–education safeguarding partnership designed to enhance the safety and wellbeing of children. When police attend a domestic abuse incident involving a child, they notify the school’s Key Adult before the next school day. This proactive approach allows us to offer immediate support tailored to the needs of our students, fostering a nurturing environment where they can thrive.

Understanding Domestic Abuse and Its Impact

Domestic abuse encompasses various forms of controlling, coercive, and violent behaviour between adults in intimate or family relationships. Children exposed to such environments may experience anxiety, hypervigilance, and emotional dysregulation, which can significantly hinder their learning and overall wellbeing. By recognising these challenges, we can better support our students in overcoming their experiences and achieving their potential.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Domestic abuse is classified as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), which can disrupt brain development and lead to long-term effects on health and behaviour. However, resilience can be fostered through positive relationships, community support, and personal skills. At Woolston Brook School, we are committed to building these connections to empower our students.

Preparing Our Community

We are actively informing governors, safeguarding leads, and staff about our involvement in Operation Encompass. Additionally, we will keep parents informed, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in supporting our children.

Next Steps for Our School

As we move forward, we will focus on integrating domestic abuse education within our curriculum, ensuring that the voice of the child remains central. Our aim is to promote a spiral curriculum that addresses relationships, emotions, and expectations, equipping our students with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate their world safely.

Woolston Brook School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all our students through Operation Encompass. Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our children, ensuring they feel supported and empowered in their educational journey.
