We currently have 16 pupils enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, and the enthusiasm and commitment shown by this group has been outstanding. Several pupils successfully achieved their Bronze Award last year and have already progressed to working towards their Silver Award. Their continued dedication highlights the positive impact the programme has on personal development. We are committed to widening access to the award so that all eligible pupils can take part and are applying for grants to continue growing and strengthening the programme over the coming years.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award provides a structured framework for young people to develop confidence, resilience, and independence through new experiences. Pupils complete four sections — Skills, Physical, Volunteering and Expedition — each designed to challenge them in diverse ways and encourage personal growth. We actively seek to offer a wide range of skill opportunities so pupils can explore their interests and build practical abilities that extend beyond the classroom.
Currently, one pupil is undertaking an Air Traffic Control course delivered by British Aerospace, gaining industry-recognised knowledge and certificates that could support future career pathways. Other pupils are developing photography skills, learning about composition, lighting, and creative storytelling — discovering that photography is both a technical and artistic discipline. We also have pupils studying car mechanics, where they are learning valuable firsthand skills that promote independence and problem-solving. These opportunities help pupils recognise their strengths, develop new talents, and build confidence in real-world applications.
The Physical section encourages pupils to challenge themselves physically while promoting healthy habits and perseverance. Pupils take part in activities in all weather conditions, strengthening both fitness and mental resilience. Alongside general fitness training, some pupils are developing specific sporting skills in golf and tennis. This section complements the school’s PE curriculum by broadening pupils’ exposure to different activities, encouraging lifelong participation in sport, and reinforcing the importance of wellbeing beyond their time at Woolston Brook.
The Volunteering section has proven to be a powerful opportunity for pupils to contribute positively to their school community. Although many initially viewed this section as the most demanding, they have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. One group is playing a key role in organising an end-of-year awards ceremony, developing teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. Another group has focused on fundraising initiatives, already raising an impressive £500 to support new football kits for both upper and primary teams. These experiences help pupils understand the value of service, responsibility, and community involvement.
Looking ahead, the Expedition section will provide pupils with a memorable and rewarding challenge. Through planning, teamwork and outdoor problem-solving, pupils will develop independence, resilience, and leadership skills in a practical setting. We are committed to ensuring that the expedition is both demanding and enjoyable, allowing every participant to experience a genuine sense of achievement. Completing this section — and the award as a whole — gives pupils something they can be truly proud of and reflects the personal growth they have achieved throughout the programme.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award continues to be an important part of our enrichment offer, supporting pupils to grow as confident, capable young people ready to face new challenges and opportunities.
