As we delve into Year 9, our curriculum covers an exhilarating range of topics that not only align with the National Curriculum but also aim to inspire a passion for scientific inquiry. Here, I will outline the key areas of study that students will engage with:
Genetics and Evolution
This unit provides an exploration of the fundamental principles of genetics, including the structure and function of DNA, the basis of inheritance, and the factors contributing to variation within species. Students will consider the historical contributions of scientists such as Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin, emphasising how their research has shaped our understanding of life on Earth. We will engage in discussions about the implications of genetic research in fields such as medicine and agriculture, as well as address ethical considerations that arise from advancements in genetic technologies. The focus will be on understanding the interconnectedness of life and how evolution is a continuous process that has shaped the diversity of organisms.
Plant Growth
In this segment, we will investigate the vital processes that underlie plant development, including photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient transport. Students will conduct experiments to understand the environmental factors that can influence plant growth, such as soil composition, light intensity, and water availability. Through hands-on projects, learners will engage in practical science, cultivating plants and observing their growth habits over time. Making Materials
This unit will take students on a journey through the fascinating world of materials science. Reactivity
The reactivity unit will introduce students to the periodic table and the relationships between different elements. Forces and Motion

Force Fields and Electromagnets
