Six students from Woolston Brook School, representing years 9, 10, and 11, recently embarked on an exciting educational visit to Myerscough College in Preston. The trip offered an invaluable opportunity for the pupils to explore the college’s diverse facilities and discover future pathways, making a lasting impression on both students and staff.
The day began in the college’s impressively stocked library, home to a staggering 50,000 books, both physical and online. Students were fascinated by the breadth of resources available, ranging from academic texts to interactive e-books, which underscored the college’s commitment to learning and accessibility. The environment sparked lively discussions about research skills and personal interests, allowing students to engage with the material in a meaningful way.
Following their literary immersion, the group moved on to the sports facilities. Courses available included golf, basketball, football, and rugby. Under the guidance of college staff, students learned about the importance of teamwork and discipline, while also gaining insight into courses for grounds management and the preparation that goes into maintaining top-quality pitches. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by the pupils were infectious, creating a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie.
The visit continued with a session in the animal care departments, where pupils had the chance to observe and handle a variety of creatures including reptiles, mammals, and insects. This hands-on experience brought classroom learning to life and encouraged greater respect for animal welfare and biodiversity. Students were particularly captivated by the chance to learn about the animals’ habitats and care requirements, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Next, students explored the college’s horticultural facilities, delving into courses for arboriculture—the science and practice of tree care. They learnt about the role of arborists and the importance of trees in the environment, and were given a talk by the tutor which highlighted the skills required in this field.
Rounding off the itinerary, the pupils visited the motor vehicle department where they got up close with sports cars and tractors. This session provided a glimpse into automotive engineering and allowed students to ask questions about mechanics, technology, and career possibilities within the industry. The excitement was palpable as students engaged with the vehicles, envisioning their future careers in engineering and technology.
Staff praised our student’s behaviour, noting how the experience helped broaden horizons and foster aspirations for further education. The supportive environment created by both the college staff and Woolston Brook School teachers contributed to a cohesive and enriching experience.
The visit to Myerscough College proved to be a rewarding adventure for Woolston Brook School students. With access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert staff, the day inspired new interests and ambitions, reinforcing the value of experiential learning in shaping futures. The school hopes to continue such partnerships, bringing more opportunities to local pupils in the years ahead.
