On the 18th of March, our Student Council gathered in the 10R Form Room at 1:00 PM, facilitated by the ever-enthusiastic Leon Rowland. With the student council in attendance, the meeting buzzed with ideas and discussions aimed at enhancing our school environment. We started with a warm welcome and a review of the previous minutes, setting the stage for an engaging session. The main discussion points were both insightful and constructive, focusing on key areas of student wellbeing, peer relationships, teaching experiences, and social activities.
Improving Wellbeing Spaces Around School was a priority. The council noted that visual timetables are proving effective in providing daily structure. However, concerns were raised about the fire alarm volume, which has caused anxiety during testing. Suggestions included exploring reduced-volume testing and advance warnings to ease worries.
When it comes to Peer Relationships and Anti-Bullying, the council is keen on promoting kindness through initiatives like buddy systems and mixed-age activities. The popularity of lunchtime clubs was evident, but there are concerns about what happens when staff members are absent. A review of backup options is in order to ensure no one misses out.
In terms of Teaching and Learning Experiences, students expressed a clear preference for practical, discussion-based learning over extended writing tasks. They are eager for more hands-on activities and group collaborations to boost engagement.
Exciting plans for Rewards and Celebrations were also discussed. Camp 2026 at PGL Winmarleigh Hall is generating enthusiasm, especially with activities like laser tag and abseiling. The idea of a “Food Around the World Day” was met with enthusiasm, linking perfectly with our food technology lessons.
Lastly, students voiced a desire for greater influence over the weekly menu and suggested a survey on changing the school uniform colour from black to blue, marking a proactive step in student voice initiatives.
The meeting concluded with a sense of community and shared purpose, as we continue to work together to make our school a better place for everyone.
