We use the Ruth Miskin programmes (Read Write Inc. and Read Write Inc Fresh Start) to give our pupils a strong foundation in reading and writing. From the very beginning, RWI helps students develop essential phonics skills, blending sounds to read words with confidence. For older or struggling readers, we offer RWI Fresh Start, ensuring everyone has the tools to catch up and continue progressing. Our structured, engaging approach makes learning to read enjoyable and helps every pupil build confidence and fluency.
'Teach a child to read and keep that child reading and you will change everything. And I mean everything.'
Jeanette Winterson

- Read a variety of books to your child (fiction, non-fiction, rhymes etc).
- Discuss the different features of various books.
- Talk about the books and other reading materials that you have shared.
- Explain the meaning of new words.
- Most importantly though, show the fun that can be gained by listening to stories and reading a range of texts. E.g. reading and then following a recipe together.
- Don't forget reading cereal packets, shopping lists, road signs, web pages, magazines, newspapers etc are also useful ways to practise reading.
If you would like any support with phonics or reading at home, please contact your child's teacher or our Literacy Coordinator, who will be happy to help.
